"Screeched Dreams" is an ongoing project inspired by Korean folklore. Many traditional stories describe goblins, or 도깨비 (Dokkaebi), as beings born from discarded objects and items once used and then thrown away by people. In rural areas, it was common to burn such items to prevent them from transforming. One particular kind of 도깨비 is said to emerge from objects stained with a woman’s blood, especially menstrual blood, embodying narratives tied to women’s laborious roles, particularly in the kitchen.

This is my own 도깨비 Do-kkae-bi (Korean goblin). I apply this concept to discarded electronic devices, e wastes, seeing them as the new goblins of our time. Just as 도깨비 are mischievous yet powerful beings born from forgotten or discarded items. In this case it was born from my old 2G slide phone. This Dokkaebi was born from an old phone with a long history tied to its owner (myself). She acts based on everything stored memories on the phone, search history, text data, screenshots, and more.

In this project, a virtual identity of mine creates another virtual identity, which in turn creates yet another, multiplying these layers of identity.

This "haunted" online identity reflects themes of loss, things that last, and the mix between past and present. My new identity, born from leftover data (texts, search history, and screenshots) on an old phone, is like a "ghost" of past digital traces and identities that still affect the present.
